Edu-Orlu Project: Inspiring a New Generation Through STEM Education

Transforming Mindsets, Empowering Futures

In April 2025, we launched the Edu-Orlu Project with a clear mission: to challenge the growing anti-education mindset often expressed as “School Na Scam” among young people in rural Nigerian communities.

We began our journey in Orlu, Imo State, partnering with two public secondary schools:

  • Ojike Memorial Secondary School

  • Girls’ Secondary School, Orlu

Our vision is to show students that education—particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)—is practical, exciting, and capable of creating real opportunities for personal and community development.

Our Strategic Approach

To achieve lasting impact, the Edu-Orlu Project was designed in several phases:

  1. Pre-Phase: STEM Demonstration and Orientation

  2. Phase One: Official Project Launch

  3. Phase Two: STEM Mentorship Club (SMC)

  4. Phase Three: Parent and Community Engagement

  5. Phase Four: Project Closure and Evaluation

While the project is still awaiting full funding approval before advancing into subsequent phases, significant progress has already been made through the successful completion of the Pre-Phase.

Building Partnerships for Sustainable Impact

The Pre-Phase provided an opportunity to establish stronger relationships with key stakeholders who will play important roles in the project’s implementation.

These partners include:

  • School leadership and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs)

  • The Orlu Town Development Union (OTDU) through its Education Committee

  • Community leaders and education advocates

Through direct engagement and collaboration, we laid the foundation for a sustainable and community-driven educational initiative.

A Day of Inspiration and Discovery

On November 13, students from both participating schools gathered at the Girls’ Secondary School examination hall for an engaging STEM orientation and educational seminar.

The event brought together:

  • Approximately 114 students

  • 11 teaching and administrative staff

  • Representatives of the Orlu Town Development Union

The highlight of the event was an interactive presentation led by STEM researcher and Edu-Orlu Project Coordinator, Macjonathan Okereke.

As someone who grew up in the same community, he shared his educational journey and demonstrated practical applications of scientific research, helping students see how education can open doors to meaningful opportunities.

Activities Conducted During the Seminar

The Pre-Phase seminar featured:

Educational Orientation

Students participated in discussions aimed at challenging anti-education beliefs and highlighting the value of learning.

STEM Research Demonstration

Live demonstrations showcased the use of sensors, microscopy, and scientific research tools, making STEM concepts more relatable and exciting.

Interactive Quiz Session

Students tested their knowledge through engaging quizzes and received prizes for outstanding performance.

Project Introduction

Participants were introduced to the broader Edu-Orlu Project and learned about upcoming opportunities through future phases.

Positive Impact on Students

The response from students was overwhelmingly encouraging.

Many participants expressed excitement, curiosity, and a renewed interest in education, particularly in STEM-related fields. The seminar successfully sparked conversations about future careers, innovation, and the role education can play in improving communities.

Most importantly, the event helped challenge harmful misconceptions about education and inspired students to see learning as a pathway to growth and opportunity.

Looking Ahead

We remain committed to expanding the Edu-Orlu Project and bringing its full vision to life.

We are currently engaged in ongoing discussions with a potential funding partner whose support would enable the implementation of the remaining project phases. While the funding process is still underway, the progress achieved so far reinforces the importance and potential impact of this initiative.

As we continue this journey, we invite individuals, organizations, and supporters who share our passion for education and youth empowerment to join us in creating brighter futures for young people in Orlu and beyond.

Together, we can inspire the next generation of innovators, leaders, and problem-solvers.
